Captain's report - T20 Match 5 vs CL

It was a beautiful day for cricket and we were pretty excited to confirm our spot in the playoffs by beating CL. As some of you might be aware, we lost against this team last year after scoring 187. While they may not be a strong team on paper, in Prashant Shinde, they have one of the best batsman in the league.

CL had a double header on Sunday, and came into our game at the back of a crushing loss. There was no doubt that they would want to make amends against us. Luckily we won the toss and elected to bat first. Mayur walked in with a new opening partner in Prady and the 2 of them started cautiously. Shinde and Thouhid were accurate. Prady was out soon trying to force the pace on the leg side. This brought Dipen on the crease. Together, they went not only rebuilt, but raised the run rate. Dipen set the tone with a monstrous straight six, before Mayur took over. Together they added on a 124 runs. Dipen contributed with a well made 41(26). With not a lot of overs left, Harish fell trying to go for a big shot.On the other hand, Mayur was unstoppable. He was hitting boundaries at will. The CL bowlers were clueless. Even the good balls were hit out of the park. Mayur finally reached his maiden T20 hundred in just 54 balls. It was a sublime innings, full of magnificent strokeplay. He was eventually out in the 17th over for a classy 115(61) - the highest T20 score by a WGCC player, eclipsing Dipen's 112 from 2 years ago. Sinu and Amar, as has become the norm, finished the innings with a quick 30 run partnership in the last 2 overs. We wrapped our innings for at 205/4 - our second highest CCL T20 score.

Our bowling was revitalized by the return of Sagar "thou shall not drive" Dinesh. He started off with his nagging short of good length which he is now famous for. As much as he tried, Shinde couldn't put bat to ball. Amar was uncharacteristcally off length, ended up conceding boundaries in between good inswingers. Prady was brought in the 5th over and he responded with a wicket of the 1st ball. Anup started off like he has been bowling on auto pilot - line and length accurate. At the end of 9 overs, they were 60/1. A mountain in front of them. Against any other opposition, the rest of the game would've been a formality. But Shinde had other ideas. He gave us a glimpse of why he is considered one of the most dangerous batsman in the league. Actually, more than a glimpse. He showed us his whole repertoire of strokes. He hit 11 fours and 10 huge sixes in his chanceless innings of 121 (59). Sagar, inevitably, got his wicket tailing in an inswinger from outside off to end the onslaught and give us a well deserved victory.

An encouraging thing I noticed during the game was the constant cheering even when our bowlers were getting hit. Be it Harish from deep cover, Prady from deep square or Prashant at mid wicket. This was a good test for our bowlers and fielders. As we talked about after the game, reflect on what you could've done differently when a batsman is in such attacking mode. This will help us in future games as the oppositions keep getting tougher.

With this victory, we have all but qualified for the playoffs. Winning the next game will ensure top 2 spot and home advantage for the playoffs. Let's put our best foot forward and continue the momentum.

Player of the match is Mayur for his 115(61) and 4-1-28-1.

Play to win!
