On a nice day for a double-header, WGCC had convincingly beaten WTCC in the first game of the day by 10 wickets and were pumped to play the second game against KUCC, a new team formed with some familiar faces. Since the first game was finished way ahead of time and having an hour and half break, Damu (as usual) and Tarun had already planned and convinced our treasurer Sinu to order some delicious food from Szechuan Palace. The team enjoyed some Manchurian and rice before getting ready for the game.
Amar won the toss against KUCC and in a heartbeat decided to bat and put a big total on the board as a strategy. Mayur and Amar opened the innings for WGCC. Mayur picked up where he had left off in first game and looked unstoppable. He was hitting boundaries at will and Amar gave him a good support on the other end. WGCC raced to 65 runs in no time when Mayur hit a short ball directly in the hands of the fielder at midwicket who juggled couple of times before holding on to the ball. He missed out on another 50 that would have been a third consecutive 50 to start the season but nonetheless, his quick 41 helped to build the foundation as he saw off the opening bowlers of KUCC with authority and utter disdain. Dipen walked in and immediately got going with rotating strike with Amar. The left-right hand combination of Mayur and Amar and then Dipen and Amar with strike rotation gave KUCC bowlers some trouble as they spotted few juicy deliveries which Amar and Dipen dispatched with ease. Amar was in the groove and found gaps in the field and both batsmen exploited the fielding by taking multiple doubles every over. Amar and Dipen took WGCC to 140 runs (75 runs partnership) in 15 overs when Dipen succumbed to Obaid while trying to accelerate the scoring. Biv joined Amar and both ran hard when boundaries were hard to come by at the end of the innings due to some good bowling by KUCC. Amar got out on the last ball of the inning an unfortunate ending of an otherwise brilliant inning. WGCC set an above par target of 175 for KUCC.
After a quick break, WGCC started the bowling with Sagar and Rohit and it will be difficult to describe in words how magical the spell was from both of them. Simply put, the batsmen were having a hard time making a contact to the ball with the impeccable line and length and would have given fits to most opening batsmen in the league. Only 19 runs were scored off the bat from the first 7 overs bowled by Sagar and Rohit as they snatched 1 and 3 wickets respectively. That spell essentially took the game away from KUCC as they had a mountain of remaining run rate to chase with only 6 wickets in hand. Arpit came in as a second change and he bowled 4 brilliant overs that included a peach of a delivery to knock of the stumps of Akbar. He was well supported by Damodar and KUCC never threatened in their chase. Tarun and Aditya finished off the last 4 overs as KUCC ended up with 99/9 in 20 overs resulting in another comprehensive victory for WGCC.
Two big victories in a day will definitely help with the momentum and the most impressive part of the day was that we lost only 3 wickets total in both matches.
Big thanks to Joe, Krishna, Prady, Parthav, Tina and Casper who came out to show their support.
