On a bright sunny day at Tanglewood Park, WGCC took on the T20 finalist
CDCC in the second game of the season after starting out with a
disappointing performance in game 1. WGCC was put into bat by CDCC on
the field that was not ideal for ground scoring shots due to thick
grass. Aware of new pitch mat and thick grass, Dipen and Amar started
the innings cautiously, leaving few deliveries to negotiate the swing
and determining how the surface was playing. Dipen was able to score few
boundaries to break the shackles a bit while Amar on the other end was
getting his eye in. Both batsmen settled in but soon lost their wickets
in quick succession. Mayur and Damu started out carefully and took their
time to settle in but once they did, they started playing freely. As
mentioned earlier, ground scoring shots were impossible on this field so
batsmen had to take few risks with aerial shots. Mayur was looking very
solid as he was able to connect multiple boundaries and sixes and raced
to his 50 while Damu on the other hand was playing a supporting role.
Both of them continued to play well and punished bad balls and the
partnership grew over 100 runs. In the last 10 odd overs, both batsmen
started playing freely and peppered the CDCC bowlers with sixes. Mayur
reached his 4th career hundred and ended up scoring 121 not out (10
fours, 9 sixes) and Damu scored 67 runs (2 fours, 6 sixes). They had the
biggest partnership in WGCC history with 210 runs. CDCC was set a huge
score of 257 to chase. Before the inning started, Amar delivered a
strong message to the team and said that they will need to take risks to
score runs as well so the bowlers and fielders need not to worry if
they hit a few boundaries and just focus on good line and length and
good fielding. Sagar and Valkal started the proceedings for WGCC and as
usual Sagar was impeccable with his line and length while Valkal was
bowling with some furious pace. Valkal was able to get the first
breakthrough with a mistimed shot caught comfortably by Biv and he soon
followed with another wicket. After a shaky start CDCC started
rebuilding and kept scoring. At the break they had 90 odd runs with 8
wickets in hands and match hanging in the balance. Soon after the break,
Mayur got Gautam to bite on a flight ball which was not timed very well
and looked like it was going to fall short of long on but a brilliant
effort from Tarun saw the end of Gautam and changed the momentum of the
game. Biv came into attack and was immediately unplayable with his line,
length and swing. He cleaned up the middle order with 3 wickets and
full spell of 7 overs and brought the match in the favor of WGCC with
required run rate over 10 rpo. Sagar came back into the attack and got
much deserved 2 wickets and at the end WGCC won the match comfortably by
99 runs. Awesome batting by Mayur and Damu and the whole
bowling ad fielding unit did well. It was as complete of a team
performance as you can get with all 3 units clicking. Lets continue this
going into our next game. Man of the Match - Mayur Go WGCC |
